Apples became Pinot, and the wine reflects it
For most of the twentieth century Sebastopol was Gravenstein apple country, and the highway west out of town still carries the name. What replaced the orchards was cool-climate viticulture, because the same maritime influence that suited apples suits Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The fog arrives most mornings and burns off late, the growing season is long, and the wines carry more acid and less weight than their equivalents from the warmer valleys. Iron Horse Vineyards, Dutton Estate Winery, and Emeritus Vineyards are the names west-county visitors ask for most. A tasting day here is quieter and less crowded than the equivalent day in Healdsburg or the Sonoma Valley, which is the point for a lot of the people who book it.
The roads are the actual reason to hire a chauffeur out here
West county driving is not like the freeway corridor. SR-116 and the lanes off it are two-lane, frequently without shoulders, and they wind through orchard and vineyard land with blind curves and slow farm traffic. Add fog that can sit until late morning and you have conditions where a visitor who has driven the Napa Valley floor is genuinely out of their depth. Push further west — the Bohemian Highway toward Occidental, or the run out to Bodega Bay and the Sonoma Coast — and the roads narrow again. This is the part of the county where the value of a professional behind the wheel is least abstract. It is also why we ask what your intended stops are before recommending a vehicle.
The Barlow, and evenings in town
The Barlow occupies the old apple-processing site on the east side of Sebastopol and has become the town's centre of gravity for evenings — tasting rooms, restaurants, a brewery, and makers' spaces on one walkable campus. It works well as the last stop of a west-county day: park the vehicle, spend two or three hours on foot, and leave without anyone in the group having to think about driving home on SR-116 in the dark. Hourly as-directed service is the natural structure for that shape of evening, since the chauffeur and vehicle stay with you rather than being dispatched away and re-booked between the last winery and dinner. Airports from the fog side of the county
STS is the practical airport for Sebastopol at 18 to 28 minutes, which is the same range as Healdsburg despite the two towns being nothing alike. SFO is 70 to 90 minutes and OAK 75 to 95 — closer than from Healdsburg but still a genuine drive down US-101, and both are exposed to Bay Area traffic at the wrong hours. Sacramento is far enough east that SMF is rarely the right answer from here; if your itinerary needs it, we will quote the run rather than pretend it is quick.
