What 'as-directed' means in practice

You do not have to file an itinerary. As-directed means the chauffeur takes direction from you during the booked hours — a stop you did not plan, a lunch that runs an extra forty minutes, a decision at two in the afternoon to skip the last thing and go back early. None of that requires a new reservation or a fresh quote. The chauffeur holds the vehicle at each stop rather than leaving and returning, so there is never a gap between you finishing something and a car being available. What we do ask for is a rough shape of the day and a start time, because a chauffeur who knows the general plan can pre-position and pick the better route.

The days that need an hourly booking

The clearest signal is stops: two fixed endpoints is a transfer, but three or more with soft timings between them is an hourly day. Beyond that, the pattern repeats across very different customers. A Sacramento legislative or agency day with hearings that never end when the calendar says. A Yountville dinner circuit where the reservation is the fixed point and everything around it floats. A day of property viewings across Sonoma County. A medical appointment where discharge time is a guess. A photo or production crew moving gear between locations. A family with an elderly relative who should not be waiting on a curb between anything. In all of them, the uncertainty is the reason hourly is the right structure.

What the clock covers, and when it does not apply

The hourly rate covers the vehicle, the chauffeur, fuel, tolls, and all waiting time — the waiting is most of what an as-directed vehicle does, and it is not billed as an extra. Time runs from your scheduled pickup through your final drop-off, and there is a daily minimum, which is standard for as-directed work because the vehicle is committed to you and not available to anyone else. It is also worth saying when hourly is the wrong choice: a single leg with two known endpoints and no waiting — home to SFO, a hotel to a downtown dinner — is cheaper booked as a flat-rate point-to-point transfer. We will point you to the transfer if that is what your day actually is.

Your chauffeur, and why continuity matters

The same chauffeur stays with you for the whole booking, and for multi-day work we hold the same one across days where scheduling allows. Continuity is not a luxury detail — a chauffeur who has already learned that you prefer the Silverado Trail over SR-29 in the afternoon, or which building entrance actually works at your Sacramento office, is measurably faster on day two than day one. Every chauffeur is employed, background-checked, and dressed for the work. You get their name and details before the day, and on a corporate booking the day's contact can be your assistant rather than you.

Booking hourly, and how it is quoted

Tell us the date, start time, the number of hours you think you need, and the general area you will be working in. We will confirm the vehicle class and quote it before you book. If the day runs long, additional time continues at the same hourly rate rather than a penalty rate — there is no multiplier for going over, and no surge at any hour of the day or night. Dispatch runs around the clock, so an hourly booking that starts before dawn or ends after midnight is priced exactly like one that starts at nine. Corporate accounts can put recurring hourly days on standing arrangements and consolidated billing.
