Three airports, and the case for each one
SMF is twenty to thirty-two minutes east and wins on nearly every domestic itinerary — it is close, the terminals are small, and the drive is short enough that a delay is annoying rather than ruinous. What makes Davis unusual is that OAK at seventy-five to a hundred minutes and SFO at eighty to a hundred and five are real alternatives rather than theoretical ones, particularly for international departures and long-haul routings that Sacramento simply does not serve. We would rather tell you which one actually fits than default to the closest. All three are flat-rate from Davis, all-inclusive, with flight tracking on every arrival so the pickup moves with the aircraft instead of the schedule.
UC Davis visitors, seminars, and the Mondavi Center
University travel has a shape of its own. Visiting lecturers and search-committee candidates arrive on precise itineraries and often do not have a car; conference delegations land in clusters and need to reach the same building; and the Mondavi Center fills an auditorium on evenings when downtown parking is at its worst. Those are all pre-booked chauffeur problems rather than rideshare problems, because the arrival time is fixed and the destination on a large campus is more specific than a street address. Davis sits on the correct side of Sacramento for wine country, and the distinction is worth understanding: heading to Napa from here means driving away from the capital rather than through it, which is why the run is shorter from Davis than from anywhere else in the region. Take I-80 west and drop south through the Carneros gap and you are at the mouth of the valley without ever touching a city grid. Downtown Davis, group nights, and the college calendar
Downtown Davis packs its restaurants and bars into a compact grid that empties into residential streets, which makes it a good place to be dropped off and a poor place to park. What flat-rate actually covers on a Davis booking
