The Plaza fills up and the loop around it is slow, so a vehicle trying to meet you at an unspecified spot ends up circling while you stand on a corner. Oakland, and by more than the raw numbers imply. OAK is 55 to 75 minutes off-peak against 60 to 80 from SFO, and the Oakland approach comes around the top of the bay instead of crossing the Golden Gate and climbing through Marin, which is where a Sonoma transfer usually loses its schedule. SFO still wins on international and long-haul choice. STS is 35 to 48 minutes from the north if the route works, and SMF is 75 to 95 minutes east through Carneros.

Roughly 60 to 80 minutes off-peak from San Francisco International, and longer at commute hours or on a Friday afternoon heading north. The transfer is flat-rate and quoted before you travel, with tolls, fuel, and standard wait time already in the number, and we track the inbound flight so a delay moves the pickup rather than starting a clock. If you have a choice of airports, Oakland is usually the shorter run to Sonoma.

Everything beyond it is the argument for a chauffeur: the historic estates east of town are up narrow lanes, the valley estates sit on side roads climbing off SR-12, and the return is a single unlit two-lane highway after dark. Booking a chauffeur also settles the question of who in the party stops after the first pour, which is the conversation nobody wants to have at a 1857 winery.

There is no rail service into the Sonoma Valley and rideshare coverage falls away quickly once you leave town, which matters most at an estate gate at four in the afternoon rather than in the square at noon. The pattern most guests settle on is hourly as-directed service for the tasting portion of the day, with the vehicle held between stops, and the evening around the Plaza handled on foot with a single ride back.

Buena Vista Winery, founded in 1857, and Gundlach Bundschu, founded in 1858 and run by the same family since, are the two that carry Sonoma's founding-era history, and both sit a short drive east of the Plaza. Sebastiani Vineyards is closer to the square. All three are appointment-led in season and are the reason a lot of guests choose Sonoma over the newer estates further north — but the approach lanes to the first two are narrow enough that vehicle size is a real consideration.

Book your tastings directly; estates generally want the reservation in the guest's name, and we will sequence around whatever times you get.

Three is comfortable and four is pushing it, mostly because SR-12 does not move as quickly as the map suggests and there is no alternate route when it slows. Tastings run an hour or more once you count the walk-up and the checkout. We would rather route you through three appointments unhurried than have you rushing the one you were most looking forward to.

Yes. The Carneros gap connects the south end of the Sonoma Valley to the south end of the Napa Valley, so a cross-county day is practical if you keep the appointments clustered at that end. What does not work is three Sonoma Valley tastings in the morning and three upvalley Napa tastings in the afternoon — that is more driving than tasting. Dinner around the square is a common second half of a tasting day, and hourly as-directed service is usually the right structure for it — the chauffeur stays with you between the last winery, the hotel, and the restaurant rather than being dispatched away and re-booked. Late returns to Glen Ellen, Kenwood, or a hotel down valley are routine; dispatch is staffed 24/7.

Two to four ride in a Mid-Size Luxury SUV, up to six in a Large Luxury SUV. Above that, the Luxury Sprinter Van seats eleven in captain's chairs and is the vehicle most tour groups end up in. The Sprinter Passenger Van takes fourteen and the Luxury Bus twenty-four. Bear in mind the side lanes off SR-12 are narrow — for eight or ten guests heading up to hillside estates, the Sprinter is the better call than a bus. We run no sedans, stretch limousines, or party buses.

A Sonoma wedding is usually a guest-movement problem rather than a couple's-car problem — room blocks scattered between the Plaza, Glen Ellen, and Kenwood, a venue up a side road with limited parking, and a return after dark.
