Usually, and especially on a summer weekend afternoon. SR-29 passes through six town centres between Napa and Calistoga, with crosswalks, angled parking, and a genuine queue through St. Helena; the Silverado Trail runs the same length of valley on the east side with virtually no signals. The exceptions matter, though. If your appointments are on the west side, crossing twice can cost more than the queue does, and after dark or in heavy rain the Trail is the road we avoid rather than the one we choose.

Start with the cross roads rather than the wineries. The Trail and SR-29 are joined at Oak Knoll Avenue, the Yountville Cross Road, the Oakville Cross Road, the Rutherford Cross Road, Zinfandel Lane, Deer Park Road, and Dunaweal Lane. Pick appointments that let you run up one road and back down the other using a single crossing in the middle, usually for lunch. Book the estates yourself, since they want the reservation in the guest's name, then send us the confirmed list and we will sequence it or tell you honestly which stop to drop.

End to end, from the southern start in the city of Napa up to Calistoga, figure roughly thirty-five to forty-five minutes off-peak with no stops — the twenty-nine miles go by quickly precisely because there is so little to stop for. A weekend morning with cycling clubs on the road adds to that, and so does anything agricultural moving between vineyards at harvest. Nobody actually drives it end to end on a tasting day, of course; the useful number is the four to eight minutes between consecutive estates on the same stretch.

The southern reach through the Stags Leap District holds Clos Du Val, Chimney Rock, Pine Ridge, and Regusci within a few minutes of each other, with Darioush a little south of them near the city of Napa. The Rutherford stretch adds ZD Wines and Mumm Napa, and Rutherford Hill sits a few hundred feet up the hillside just east of the Rutherford Cross Road. There are many more between and beyond those; that list is simply the spine most Trail itineraries are built on. All of them are appointment-only in practice.

It is legal and it is quiet, but it is the harder of the two valley roads after dark and we will say so. There is no lighting along it, effectively no shoulder to pull onto, deer moving at dusk in open country, and a fair number of drivers finishing a day that began with an eleven o'clock tasting. SR-29 is lit, has towns along it, and is far more forgiving of a tired driver. On most evenings we take guests home that way even when a phone insists the Trail is quicker.

On a weekend morning, yes, and it is not a complaint. The Trail is one of the best-known road rides in Northern California, riders come through in clubs, and the long rises hide them until you are close. A professional chauffeur does not overtake into a blind rise or pass a group on a curve, which means a Saturday morning northbound run genuinely takes longer than a mapping app predicts. We build that into the schedule rather than trying to claw it back, which is another argument for an early first appointment.

The Yountville Cross Road, which is the shortest hop between the Trail and the town and the natural mid-day crossing for anyone whose morning was spent in the Stags Leap District. It puts you into Yountville in a few minutes and back onto the Trail just as quickly if the afternoon continues north. The Oakville Cross Road is the other well-used crossing and makes more sense if your afternoon appointments sit further up SR-29. Either way we would rather cross once with purpose than twice by accident.

Yes, and it is the normal arrangement — the vehicle stays with you for the day rather than being summoned to each estate gate. That matters more here than downtown: rideshare coverage on this road is unreliable at best, and an estate gate on a two-lane road with no shoulder is a poor place to stand waiting. On an hourly as-directed booking your chauffeur waits at the property while you taste, and your coats, cases, and cooler stay in the vehicle between stops.

Three comfortably, four if they are clustered on the same stretch and nobody lingers. Tastings run sixty to ninety minutes once you count the walk-up and the checkout, and the hillside properties take longer to reach and leave than their mileage implies. The Trail's advantage is that consecutive estates on the same reach are often only minutes apart, which buys you time you would spend driving elsewhere in the valley. We would still rather talk you down to three good stops than run you through five you will not remember.

Zinfandel Lane or Deer Park Road, depending on where you finish. Both cross west from the Silverado Trail into St. Helena and both skip the slow approach along SR-29 that catches everybody driving up from Rutherford in the late afternoon. If your last appointment is further north, Deer Park Road is the better call; from the Rutherford stretch, Zinfandel Lane is shorter. Which one we take is a real decision on a busy afternoon rather than a detail, and it is the sort of thing you are booking a local chauffeur for.

STS is closest at 50 to 68 minutes off-peak, but it is a regional airport with a short route map, so check whether it serves your origin before planning around it. OAK and SMF both run 65 to 90 minutes, with SMF the sensible option arriving from the east. SFO is 70 to 95 and still where most guests land because the long-haul and international choice is far wider. Hourly with a daily minimum rather than flat-rate, because appointments here habitually overrun and a fixed price would either shortchange you or pad the quote. The road itself takes anything we run, up to and including the twenty-four-seat Luxury Bus. The constraint is the driveways. Hillside properties reached by switchbacks off the Trail, Rutherford Hill among them, are a poor match for the largest vehicles, and some estates ask larger groups to arrive in a single coach rather than several cars. Most Trail groups end up in the Luxury Sprinter Van, which seats eleven in captain's chairs and reaches everywhere.
