The road west begins outside your door
Most coastal day trips out of the Bay Area start with an hour of undoing your position — getting off a freeway, working across Marin, finding the right westbound turn. From San Anselmo none of that applies, because the road that runs through the middle of town is the road to the coast. Sir Francis Drake Boulevard leaves the Ross Valley heading west, climbs over the hills, drops into the Olema Valley and meets SR-1 near the shore of Tomales Bay. It is a lovely drive and it is also a demanding one: two lanes, plenty of curves, wooded stretches with no lighting at all, and cyclists in numbers on a decent weekend. Being driven it rather than driving it changes the day completely, particularly on the way home when the light has gone. When guests ask us what the advantage of starting in San Anselmo is, that is the whole answer — you are already on the right road, and somebody else is doing the difficult bit.
A coastal day that never touches the freeway
There is a specific kind of San Anselmo booking we take more than any other, and it is a day out west that avoids US-101 from beginning to end. Out along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in the morning, down the Olema Valley, lunch or oysters somewhere on Tomales Bay, an afternoon on the shore or out toward Point Reyes National Seashore, and back the same way in the evening. It suits people who have no interest in a freeway and every interest in the scenery, and it works because the geography genuinely cooperates. What we would flag before you book: the westbound road is slower than the mileage implies, so an itinerary with four stops in it is optimistic and one with two or three in it is a good day. Send us the plan and we will tell you which of those you have written. These days are hourly with a daily minimum rather than flat-rate, because the coast never runs to schedule.
San Anselmo Avenue after six
The Avenue is the other reason we are here regularly. It is a walkable, low-rise run of antique dealers, independent shops and restaurants, and it gives San Anselmo an evening calendar that a town of its size has no business having — dinners, gallery evenings, birthdays that involve two or three venues rather than one. A chauffeured vehicle solves the same problem here that it solves in wine country: nobody in the party has to volunteer to stay dry, nobody is negotiating with an app at eleven at night in the Ross Valley, and the group stays together between stops rather than splitting across whatever turns up. A single evening out and back is a flat-rate booking, quoted upfront. An evening with several venues in it is better as hourly as-directed service, because the same chauffeur and the same vehicle stay with you between them. It is also the structure that makes a milestone birthday or an anniversary dinner feel organised rather than improvised, since nobody has to stand outside on the Avenue at the end of it working out how everyone is getting home. Being off the freeway cuts both ways
We would rather say the inconvenient thing than let you discover it on the morning of a flight. San Anselmo is not on US-101, and that costs time in the direction of the airports. SFO runs about 40–55 minutes off-peak, OAK about 45–62, and Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County about 48–62 — each of them longer than from the towns sitting directly on the freeway, because the first part of the journey is getting out of the Ross Valley before the fast bit starts. Those are off-peak figures, and a weekday morning southbound is not off-peak. So for an early departure we set a deliberately conservative pickup time rather than quoting you the optimistic end of a range and hoping. Flight tracking is standard on every airport booking, the transfer is flat-rate with tolls and standard wait time included, and dispatch runs around the clock for the departures that leave before dawn. The compensation for all of this is the other direction: the same geography that puts you a little further from a terminal puts you an hour closer to the coast than almost anywhere else in the Bay Area. It is a trade, and for most people living in the Ross Valley it is a trade they made deliberately.
North to wine country from the Ross Valley
Turn the other way out of San Anselmo and the day is a wine-country one. The Ross Valley joins US-101 a few minutes east, and from there Petaluma, Santa Rosa and eventually Healdsburg are a clean run north, with the Sonoma Valley and the city of Napa reachable east across SR-37 and SR-121. Because San Anselmo is already well north of the Golden Gate, a tasting day starting here skips the least predictable stretch of any itinerary that begins in San Francisco, which usually buys a group either a later start or one more appointment. Our Petaluma base is up the same corridor, so repositioning to collect you is short and there is no dead-head charge buried in the quote.
